My start as a Quilter
Mar 28th, 2011 by quiltingdaydreams

This is my first podcast and I introduce how I, a non-artist, decided to become a quilter. I tell the crazy story of falling in love with a fabric, and how it brought me into this fabulous world filled with ideas....and fabric. I have never sewn before I began my first quilt. I explain how I worked to complete my first quilt, and how my daughter quickly got me started on my second.

Katie, I listened to your first podcast this morning while driving to work. I loved it! You seem very comfortable as you were speaking and I enjoyed hearing your enthusiasm for your new found hobby. Be sure to keep that first quilt forever. You will be amazed at how much your skills will improve with each project. Maybe someday soon you will even have a project you would feel comfortable having judged. In the mean time, just continue to love your new hobby. It also sounds like a good bonding experience with your children. June
Hi Katie. I just listened to your first podcast, I got the link from the Quilted Cupcake’s blog. I loved your episode! I too am a new quilter and am loving it so I found your enthusiasm so neat to listen to. I am just finishing my first bed sized quilt for my 9 year old son. I am sewing the binding on today as we speak. Any technique that you’re not sure of, there are answers on the internet! I am also not a part of a quilting group or guild or anything, I figure things out on my own and use the internet as a resource a LOT, and I have learned so much. One link I’ll share with you because I’m using it right now and it is AWESOME, is for invisible binding and its found here: http://turningturning.com/tutorial-invisible-ladder-stitch-for-quilt-binding/ I hope you find it helpful.

LOVE your enthusiasm ( can t spell, hope you will forgive)
Binding: Match the darkest fabric in your quilt with a solid color and use that … that will frame and calm the quilt. the purpose of binding is to protect the quilt and keep it together. Binding protects the edges. I It needs to be study and I like dark cause it does not show the dirt as much.
Loved your podcast BTW and look forward to more. Beginning quilters help us review our skills and re think how things are done.
Disappearing Nine patch is a fun and easy quilt. Are you making them out of charms ? If so match up your fabric with similar but less busy fabrics. If you do not find a tutorial let me know and I will try to help you through it.
Got to run but I will come back … you are going to bring the fun to quilting podcasting

LOVE your picture of your quilt…. if you designed it you did a great job.
Here at the bottom of this page are pictures of my disappearing nine patch. Is it the same pattern? ( The pictures are poor but I think you can see the pattern.) It is a great pattern. Your quilt will be lovely.

Hi Nonnie! Thank you so much!
I am already a part of Big Tent. My nickname there is cobaltkat.
I have even joined your room. I am sorry to hear about your computer. No fun!
I love your disappearing nine patch pictures. I am working on mine for my dad’s quilt. I put pictures of the blocks on my blog. It is the same. I am using charm packs to make it. I have a cream solid as the middle piece. I used the tutorial from the Missouri Star Quilt Company and it has been a ton of fun. The link to that tutorial is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEjZOXxPazg
Here is the tutorial that I used to make the pinwheels on my quilt. It is so cool.

My daughter and I designed the quilt. Thank you so much for the kind words. She loves it.
I am just concerned that I won’t be able to quilt it in a way that will look good. I am trying to stitch in the ditch, but my new walking foot is giving me troubles. Any ideas? I was thinking of a grid pattern.
What kind of thread do you use when you are quilting? I am using white thread with a thin bobbin thread in the bobbin, but the bobbin thread keeps breaking. Help! Have a fabulous day! Kate
Hi Katie,
What a wonderful fresh new podcast! It’s great to hear someone so excited about quilting & also willing to do a podcast about it from a beginner’s point of view. I listen to just about all of the quilting podcasts & have already subscribed to yours as well. Keep up the good work. And keep enjoying the world of quilting. One thing you will learn very soon……quilters are the nicest people

Hi Katie - I listened to your first podcast coming home from work today. Your enthusiasm and excitement made me want to get home and at my sewing machine. The pink and black pinwheel quilt came out beautifully. You should be so proud of what you’ve accomplished. Keep up the good work.
Not only do I think about quilting when I’m working but I lay awake at night planning projects! Julie
